Position: General Practitioner

Place of work: Kirwan GP Clinic

Tell us about your role and what a typical day looks like?

Since late 2023, I have been working as a GP Registrar at Kirwan GP Clinic in Townsville. Prior to that, I spent the last seven years practising as a General Practitioner alongside my cardiology training in Ukraine.

Each day in general practice brings new challenges, especially as I balance my professional responsibilities with my family and children. Nevertheless, treating patients remains the most fulfilling part of my day.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I have a particular passion for managing cardiovascular conditions, including dyslipidaemia and heart disease. I also have extensive experience and a strong interest in interpreting ECGs and Holter monitor results, which I do with confidence and precision.

Is there a particular patient story or experience that has stuck with you?

Two patient stories stand out as milestones in my journey, helping me gain confidence and build strong rapport in my role as a GP in Australia.

Cardiac condition

One memorable case involved an Aboriginal woman who transferred from another clinic after seeing my profile on HotDoc and social media, drawn by my cardiology background.

She came seeking a second opinion regarding her cardiac condition. After a thorough assessment, I initiated treatment and provided comprehensive education.

At her follow-up visit – after also consulting with a hospital cardiologist – she expressed satisfaction with the treatment plan and chose to continue her care with me.

Victorian family

Another memorable experience involved a family who relocated from Victoria in early 2024. The woman became pregnant mid-year and faced multiple complications during her pregnancy.

While she was under the regular care of a midwife and specialist, I saw her frequently to monitor both her physical and mental health.

After she had her baby, she returned for a postpartum check-up. She was doing well and shared a comment that moved me deeply: “Dr. Gul, you are a good person and a kind human being. Thank you for taking care of me.”

These words remain close to my heart and continue to inspire me in my work.

Each day in general practice brings new challenges, especially as I balance my professional responsibilities with my family and children. Nevertheless, treating patients remains the most fulfilling part of my day.

Why do you choose to work in a regional, rural, or remote area?

Although Kirwan GP Clinic was the only opportunity available to me in Townsville, I genuinely love working here. My family and I feel settled and supported, and we appreciate the availability of everything we need in this vibrant community.

What do you like to do outside of work when you are out and about in your community?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my children, often playing cricket and bowling with them on weekends. We’re an active family, and we regularly engage in various sports at home or at the local park.

We also enjoy travelling around Australia and discovering new adventures together.

I feel truly blessed in both my personal and professional life. I’ve been welcomed and accepted by the community I serve.

My patients appreciate the care I provide, especially my commitment to seeing them on time and offering holistic, patient-centred care.

Is there anything you would like to add?

In addition to clinical practice, l’ve recently joined James Cook University (JCU) in Townsville as an Honorary Lecturer.

I also serve as a member of the Clinical Advisory Group for the PHASES Project (Preventing Heart Attack and Stroke) in Queensland, a collaboration between the Heart Foundation (CCQ) and Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN).

Over the past four years, I’ve actively contributed to research, publishing more than 13 articles in various medical journals.

I also work as an Associate Editor with Cureus, part of the Springer Group, and have been a peer reviewer for three years.

Most recently, I earned a certification in lipidology from the European Atherosclerosis Society, further strengthening my expertise in cardiovascular care.

Kirwan GP Clinic offers fully bulk-billed consultations for all patients with a valid Medicare card. The clinic provides comprehensive GP services for all ages – from routine check-ups to chronic disease management. It is open after hours, on weekends, and public holidays.
