MyndKind

Support designed to fit you.

MyndKind helps people in northern Queensland find the right mental health support for their needs, especially when cost, transport, location, or other barriers make it hard to access care.

MyndKind is Northern Queensland Primary Health Network’s funded model of mental health stepped care. It brings together different types of mental health support so people can be connected with the right service, at the right time, in a way that works for them.

The MyndKind stepped care model includes a range of service offerings underpinned by five service delivery principles. It puts each person at the centre of their own mental health journey, so they feel heard, understood, and respected every step of the way.

MyndKind service offerings

Stepped care means support can change as a person’s needs change. Some people may need information, guidance, or help connecting with services. Others may need therapy, clinical care coordination, or more intensive support.

The goal is to connect each person with the least intensive support that is safe and helpful for them now, while making it easier to move to a different type or level of support if their needs change.

MyndKind is for people in the greater Cairns, Townsville, and Mackay regions, including rural areas, who are experiencing mental health concerns and have difficulty accessing other mental health services.

This may include people experiencing financial hardship, transport barriers, limited local service options, or other life circumstances that make it hard to get help.

One woman, who was unable to get out of bed and for who telehealth wouldn’t work, was able to access counselling from the comfort of her home. Another man would meet his provider in a park for his first several sessions.

MyndKind is not a match for people who can access suitable support through other services, such as Medicare-subsidised psychology, Employee Assistance Programs, Department of Veterans Affairs services, NDIS supports, online therapy options, or other local services.

If MyndKind is not the right fit, the team can help connect people with another support option where possible.

A MyndKind door is always the right door. People can ask for help in different ways, and the team will work with them to understand what support may be most suitable.

Information for referrers

GPs and service providers do not need to know exactly which MyndKind service a person needs before helping them connect. The most important information is what the person is experiencing, what support they are looking for, what barriers are making access difficult, and whether there are any current risks or urgent concerns.

A Mental Health Treatment Plan is not required to access MyndKind. Clinical information, current supports, medication details, risk information, and the person’s preferences are helpful where available.

MyndKind is a new approach to mental health care driven by people’s needs. It focuses on improved access to support, a connected team approach to care, and smooth transitions as people’s needs change.

MyndKind includes a more diverse range of services and supports for people to access. Support is flexible, which means it may happen in a group, in a person’s home, on the phone, by telehealth, in a local service, or in another place that feels safe and practical.

MyndKind has been designed in northern Queensland by locals who have personally navigated mental health challenges and service experiences. It aims to bring a person’s mental health team together, so people do not need to keep retelling their story.

MyndKind is free for people who access the service. Providers offer a range of connection options, including in-person and telehealth support where available.

MyndKind is one part of the broader mental health and community support system. It is designed for people who face barriers to accessing other suitable support, and it may not be the right service for everyone.

People do not need to know which service they need before asking for help. A conversation with Medicare Mental Health, a Front Door, a GP, or another service provider can help identify what support might be most useful.

People may move between different types of MyndKind support as their needs change. This may mean stepping up to more intensive support, stepping down when things improve, or accessing more than one type of support at the same time.

If another service is a better fit, the MyndKind team will try to support a warm connection to that service where possible, rather than leaving the person to navigate alone.

  • You will be treated with kindness and respect.
  • Your first conversation should feel helpful, not like being passed around.
  • You should know what will happen next.
  • Support can change if your needs change.
  • You should not have to keep retelling your story unnecessarily.
  • If another service is a better fit, MyndKind will try to help you connect with that support.

Need help now?

MyndKind is not an emergency or crisis service. If someone needs urgent mental health support, contact 1300 MH Call (1300 642 255), local crisis support services or the nearest hospital emergency department.  If someone is in immediate danger, call Triple Zero (000).

More than 570 stakeholders engaged in the design process, including 21 group workshops, three GP focus group meetings, and 40 individual stakeholder meetings.
