Brisbane South PHN invites you and your colleagues to attend a free hybrid education event on accessing the NDIS for those from a refugee background. This event can be attended in-person (Brisbane) or online.
Agenda
5pm–6pm: Registration and dinner (in-person)
6pm–8pm: Education session (online and in-person)
Speakers
- Dr Rachel Claydon, GP Fellow, Refugee Health Network Queensland (RHNQ), GP - Mater Refugee Complex Care Clinic.
- Meryl Jones, Nurse Unit Manager, Mater Integrated Refugee Health Service.
- Representative, NDIS Local Area Coordinator (LAC) Partners in the Community (PITC), Carer's Queensland.
- Representative, The Benevolent Society.
- Representatives from the G11 (Mater refugee health advisory group members from Brisbane who have experience of disability and/or the NDIS).
The speakers and others will join them to form a panel, to discuss two case studies and answer questions that may arise from the audience. The panel members are yet to be finalised, but we hope to offer a:
- representative from Carer's QLD
- representative from The Benevolent Society
- representatives from the G11
- representative from the Access Resource Team and/or AMPARO,
- GP who currently cares for refugee patients, and
- nurse or OT who is also working with refugees who have disabilities.
Learning outcomes
- Develop an enhanced understanding of eligibility for the NDIS for recent humanitarian arrivals.
- Understand the current process of applying for NDIS access and how to support your patients to engage with the correct Local Area Coordinator.
- Learn new pathways for support for your refugee background patients who are in the NDIS but are struggling with the administration or management or advocacy related to their plan.
- Develop communication strategies for your practice that enable effective engagement with patients of a refugee background about disability.
