Supporting adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Posted Monday 29 April 2024 | mhaod@brisbanenorthphn.org.au

Metro North Health and Brisbane North PHN invite GPs to join your general practice colleagues and staff specialist adult psychiatrist Dr Ravinder Sohal for a state-wide discussion about adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder causing a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity. Contrary to popular belief, the symptoms do not disappear in adulthood. ADHD has gained prominence in the public conversation and GPs are commonly approached with related inquiries.

Adult ADHD is estimated to affect at least three per cent of the adult population of Australia (500,000 individuals). Of that three per cent, it is further estimated that 75 per cent are unaware that they have the condition, and thus are both unassessed and untreated.

Topics will include recognising and co-managing adult ADHD, supporting patients who are exploring a diagnosis of ADHD, resources for GPs, families and patients with ADHD, as well as prescribing considerations for GPs caring for patients with adult ADHD.
